Café Con Pan -Official CD release May 11th, 8pm at Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas Street West, Toronto)
Café Con Pan is an extraordinary musical duo that plays son jarocho, unique traditional music from Veracruz, Mexico. Café con Pan explores the roots of son jarocho while connecting with other traditions from Latin America and beyond. Over the past decade this Toronto-based duo has maintained a multi-disciplinary relationship with son jarocho with projects that combine research, collaboration, visual arts, teaching, and producing.
Café con Pan's performances are guided by Kali Niño's uplifting voice and her effusive zapateado dancing. She began dancing and singing as a child, surrounded by legendary son jarocho musicians. She skilfully combines the vigorous impetuous of the jarocho genre with an introspective quality. Alec Dempster plays an array of traditional instruments such as la leona, la guitarra de son, la jarana and el pandero. In addition to their performances, Alec and Kali conduct interactive workshops, classes and courses, for all age groups. They lead to a broader understanding of Mexican culture, Spanish language, and musical skills.
Recently, Alec and Kali shared their passion for music, memories of Mexico, and experiences of migration in a beautiful and touching documentary titled "Making Sones and Memories".
On may 11, Café con Pan will be launching their first CD recorded in Canada. The CD is titled "Nuevos Caminos a Santiago" (New Roads to Santiago), a tribute to Santiago Tuxtla, the small town of magical hills and valleys where both learned to play. The CD features 10 creative musicians including guests recorded in Los Angeles and Xalapa.
The launching of "Nuevos Caminos a Santiago" will take place Friday May 11 at Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas West), 8:00pm, with special collaboration of La Marisoul, singer from Chicano group La Santa Cecilia, from Los Angeles. For more information visit Café con Pan's website www.cafeconpan.ca
