About Alameda Theatre
Alameda Theatre Company produces Canadian theatre with a distinct Latin American perspective. Alameda develops the work of Canadian Latin American playwrights, creates professional opportunities for its theatre artists and mentors the next generation of Latino artists in Canada. Alameda's mandate is to:
1. Present professionally staged works of Canadian Latin American playwrights and support the development of their work.
2. Present international Latin American theatre in fresh, Canadian interpretations.
3. Create and implement programs that engage with Canadian Latin American youth.
4. Train and cultivate Canadian theatre artists through mentorship, apprenticeship and development programs in order to provide opportunity and generate experience.
Alameda Theatre Company accomplishes it’s mandate through the De Colores Festival of New Works and Nueva Voz Mentorship and Youth Initiatives. The De Colores Festival focuses on providing developmental support for works in progress written by Canadian Latin American artists. Nueva Voz gives Latin American youth (age 14-19) tools to explore issues of racism, stereotypes, gang violence, family, sexuality, power, and identity as well as concrete experience creating and producing professional theatre. Alameda's productions give professional experience to its artists and educate its audiences about the Latin American experience in Canada.
