Organized by Pride Toronto, in partnership with Latin American Researchers of Ontario (LARO), the panel will discuss the state of human rights in Latin America, the Caribbean and the World, where stigma, hate crimes, homophobia, transphobia, and discrimination against members of the LGBT population continue to be tremendous challenges. The panel will also discuss how such challenges can be addressed at the international level, particularly after the huge achievement in Argentina's Gender Identity Bill in 2012.
Joining the panel is this year’s Pride Toronto International Grand Marshal, Marcela Romero who is the Regional Coordinator for Latin American and Caribbean Network of Transgender People (REDLACTRANS), a regional organization established in 2005 in response to the social exclusion and lack of representation of the transgender community in Latin America. She is recognized for her hard work in advocating for Gender Identity Law that was passed in Argentina in May 2012 to recognize transgender people as a population and she is currently supporting projects to advocate for Gender Identity Laws in Bolivia, El Salvador, Brazil and Guatemala.
Please join the panel discussion and cocktail reception to honour Marcela Romero’s outstanding work defending the human rights of LGBT people in the region by RSVP at www.2013igm.eventbrite.ca, see the attached flyer for more details.
