Aluna Theatre invites you to a workshop performance of “The Femme Playlist” by Catherine Hernandez. Sept 28 at 8pm, 1 Wiltshire Ave. Unit 124, Toronto, ON M6N This is a fundraising performance to benefit Aluna Theatre's Panamerican Routes/Rutas Panamericanas Festival, an International Festival of Performance/Un Festival Internacional De Artes Escénicas happening in Feb 27- Mar 14 2014. About the Play From masturbation to motherhood, body shame to burlesque, Catherine Hernandez uncovers the realities of living as a queer woman of colour set to the music of her life. This multidisciplinary feast for the eyes reveals the delicious nature of being sexy and proud, slutty and loud, queer and brown. Say something. About Catherine Hernandez Catherine Hernandez is a proud queer woman of colour and single mom. As the daughter of Cecille Estioko Hernandez, a pioneer of Filipino Folk Arts education in Canada, Catherine Hernandez is dedicated to the development of the Filipino-Canadian artistic community. In 2007, her first play, Singkil, was directed by Nina Lee Aquino, produced by fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company in association with Factory Theatre and garnered seven Dora Mavor Moore nominations including Outstanding New Play, Independent Division. She recently wrote and performed the critically acclaimed one-woman puppet show, Eating with Lola (Sulong Theatre and Next Stage Festival) directed by Puppetmongers’ Ann Powell. The show was a major hit, having been first developed by fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre and then toured North Carolina’s Duke University and Bogota, Colombia for the Festival de Mujeres en Enscena in Spanish (translation by Mexican puppeteer, Amaranta Leyva). She was Theatre Passe Muraille’s 08/09 playwright in residence and was the theatre’s Associate Producer in 2009/2010. She has recently launched Sulong Theatre, a company dedicated to producing theatre by and about women of colour. The creative wing of the company, the Sulong Theatre Collective was proud to be Carlos Bulosan Theatre’s 09/10 playwrights in residence. The Collective’s inaugural creation, Future Folk, was produced by Theatre Passe Muraille as part of its 09/10 season. Catherine as an individual was named Carlos Bulosan Theatre’s Ontario Playwright in Residence in 10/11 to develop Eating with Lola. Kilt Pins, produced by Sulong Theatre in November of 2011 in partnership with Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture has been published by Playwrights Canada Press. On September 21 2012, Catherine immersed herself in a lifeboat filled with filthy water for 24 hours without access to food. The event, named Operation Lifeboat, raised money and awareness for the UN-Natural recurring disasters in the Philippines. It involved more than 45 artists worldwide who performed each hour of the event and resulted in over 30 hours of watched video footage and more than 1100 viewers worldwide. About Aluna Theatre The artistic mission of Aluna Theatre is to embrace the myriad of voices, cultures, and stories of our population, which are transforming the landscape of Canadian theatre. In Aluna’s plays, works in translation, and international co-creations, people are complex individuals who exist beyond the restrictions of cultural labels. Aluna encourages new hybrids of theatre evolved from a rich collaboration of experiences, performance traditions and media by engaging both emerging and established theatre professionals. For over a decade, Aluna Theatre has been attempting to shift the scales of imbalance by bringing social justice, equality and human rights to the forefront of all productions. Mayor Paterson, Justicia for Migrant Workers (J4MW) is a non-profit political collective that advocates for the rights of migrant workers in Canada. J4MW has been actively engaging migrant workers in the Leamington area for over a decade. During this time, we have met thousands of migrant workers in this community. Over the past decade we have followed with great interest the wider community’s response to migrant workers. Unfortunately, your recent remarks come as no surprise to members of our collective. In the past several years, the open hostility that your council has shown towards migrant workers represents the most blatant displays of anti-migrant sentiments we have ever witnessed. Recent comments in the media, have disparaged the use of public library facilities by migrant workers; made allegations that there are too many migrant workers ‘loitering’ downtown; and criticized the presence of too many ‘ethnic’ businesses serving the migrant worker community. In each instance ‘cultural differences’ have been used to justify the wider community’s adverse reaction to the presence of large groups of migrant workers in visible local spaces. To pass off this tension as a matter of difference based on one’s place of origin is disingenuous at best. It alludes to there being an equal and level playing field between migrant workers and Canadians. This completely masks the fact that all migrant workers in your community are: (1) Racialized (2) Bound to their employers (3) Denied social and labour mobility (4) Denied the ability of permanent residency (5) Are separated from their families for significant portions of time (6) Cannot exercise social and democratic participation in the processes that you represent. Your analysis does not acknowledge the power imbalance in your community. You and your council are free to condemn and stigmatize migrant workers without any real and significant response from workers themselves; a population who have lived and worked in Leamington for fifty years, but continue to be considered temporary.
Meanwhile, in the North, fearful investors flock to gold and some call for the return of the Gold Standard. “What is the value of the one place we have to live?” Commentators Noam Chomsky, Magalí Rey Rosa, and “economic hi...tman” John Perkins draw connections between the stratospheric forces of Wall Street and San Miguel’s struggle.

The Life and Campaigns of Richard L Vowell, British Legionnaire and Commander, Hero and Patriot of the Americas, by María Páez Victor; with remarks and book signing by the author and live music during dinner. Tuesday September 24 at 6:30pm Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas Street West, Toronto, ON Liberty or Death! tells the story of Richard Longfield Vowell, an audacious and intrepid young English adventurer who abandoned his studies at Oxford in 1817 to fight against the Spanish Empire that had ruled Latin America for 300 years. It is also the story of the little known British Legion, formed of English and Irish volunteers, which became an integral part of Simo'n Boli'var's patriot army. This important first biography is based on extensive research undertaken in three continents. It uncovers information previously unknown about Vowell's exciting life and daring exploits - from his birth in a genteel English country town, to his campaigns in the far-off Americas, and to his period in the harsh landscape of Australia, where he confronted another empire and was subsequently and unjustly imprisoned on a remote Pacific island from which he made a dramatic escape. This absorbing account sheds light on a lost but fascinating episode of British endeavor and valor and its contribution to the shaping of the modern Americas. About the author Maria Páez Victor is a sociologist, born in Caracas, Venezuela where she obtained her first degree. She has an MA from the University of Kent at Canterbury and a Ph.D. from York University, Canada. She lives in Toronto, and travels regularly to Venezuela and Britain. A life-long enthusiast of Latin American and British history and politics, she participates regularly on Canadian and Venezuelan television, radio, and at public events, and has published numerous articles on recent and historical topics in both English and Spanish. As a curious anecdote, while researching for this book, a remote personal connection surfaced with Richard Vowell, who served under three revolutionary generals who are in the author’s family tree, among them José Antonio Páez, leader of the Llanero cavalry and later President of Venezuela. Necesita morir y volver a nacer, resucitar. The event will also feature a reading and bilingual (English/Spanish) performance of "Real Mother" a scene from the play Harriet's House/La Casa de Harriet, by Tara Goldstein. Harriet's House is a play about love, loss, and adoption in a Canadian lesbian family. Adoptive mother Harriet reluctantly gives 17-year old Luísa permission to return to the Catholic orphanage in Bogotá, Colombia, where she spent three years of her childhood. The play has been translated into Spanish by Jorge Arcila and will be performed as staged reading in Bogota in August 2013. Friday July 12 at Aluna Theatre studio (1 Wiltshire Ave. Unit 123, Toronto, ON) from 7:00-9:00pm "How to Integrate Scenic Arts and Social Sciences in the Classroom" analyzes the research journey of a group of 16 teenagers who collectively explored historical memory through practices of process drama. Participant-researchers worked out the story of the Afro-descendant Manuel Saturio Valencia which still struggles to overcome a legacy of oblivion and historical erasure. Thus at stake in this project was the recovery of forgotten stories, the construction of a more inclusive public memory, and the formation of a critical historical consciousness. Jorge Arcila holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Political Studies from La Pontifica Universidad Javeriana, Colombia Tara Goldstein is a professor at the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, University of Toronto. This event is dedicated to the memory of OISE/UT Professor Roger Simon and Arlan Londono, Colombian artist, curator and scholar who recently passed away.
